Plato Learning Net Loss Narrows

Cooper fourth-quarter net income rose, as costs fell for items such as research and development. SAIC third-quarter profit grew 8% on higher revenue. Peerless Systems decline in hardware revenue resulted from the discontinuation of sales of the company''s Everest controllers in the fourth quarter of fiscal 2006. Plato Learning fourth-quarter loss, as orders for the company''s subscription courseware products rose sharply and operating expenses decreased.

 
Cooper Cos. (COO: chart), medical supplies company, said that its fourth-quarter net income increased to $13.6 million versus $8.57 million during the fourth quarter a year ago. Income applicable to shareholders advanced to $14.1 million, or 30 cents per share, compared with $9.09 million, or 19 cents per share, in the prior year. Quarterly revenue declined to $216 million versus $220.6 million in the prior year.

SAIC Inc. (SAI: chart), research, engineering, and technology services provider, said that its third-quarter net income increased to $98 million, or 28 cents per share, compared with $91 million, or 25 cents per share, during the same period in the prior year. Quarterly income per share from continuing operations was 26 cents, versus 20 cents in the prior year. Third-quarter revenue climbed to $2.14 billion versus $2.02 billion in the prior year.

Peerless Systems Corp. (PRLS: chart), provider of advanced imaging and networking technologies and components to the digital document market, said it swung to a third-quarter net loss of $18,000, or breakeven on a per-share basis, compared with a net income of $1.05 million, or 6 cents per share during the same period in the prior year. Quarterly revenue declined to $7.98 million from $9.65 million in the year-ago period.

Plato Learning Inc. (TUTR: chart), educational software maker, said that its fourth-quarter net loss narrowed to $11.6 million, or 49 cents per share, compared with a net loss of $13.9 million, or 59 cents per share, in the same period last year, as impairment charges and other expenses dropped. Excluding restructuring charges, among other items, the company posted a net loss of 7 cents per share versus 9 cents per share a year earlier. Revenue declined 29% to $23.8 million compared to $33.7 million a year ago.
