MSCI Inc Plunges 17%, Acergy Rises

Index management and investment tools provider, MSCI Inc plunged 17% after it reported lower earnings on rising sales. The company reported revenue rise of 21% in the first quarter to $105 million and net income declined 17% to $18 million. Earnings per share declined to 17 cents from 26 cents a year ago. Internatioal Speedway net income rose to $36 million on revenue of $193 million. Railroad freight car maker reported 9 cents a share earnings compared to a loss of 38 cents a year ago.

 
Net earnings for the quarter, were $1.4 million, or $.09 per diluted share, compared to a net loss of $6.1 million, or $.38 per share, a year earlier.

Greenbrier (GBX: chart) dropped $1.19 to $25.25.

Acergy (ACGY: chart) said that for the first quarter ended on February 29, 2008 net operating revenue increased 12% to $636 million from $566 million for the same quarter 2007.

Net income for the first quarter 2008, from continuing operations increased 21% to $41 million compare with $34 million for the same quarter 2007. Diluted earnings per share in the quarter declined to $0.20 compared to $0.19 a year ago.

The provider of sea-bed to surface engineering services reported that $1 billion of new contracts were awarded in the quarter. At the end of the quarter the backlog increased to $3.97 billion from $3.175 billion at the end of the previous quarter.

In the quarter the company purchased $132 million of stocks.

Acergy (ACGY: chart) jumped $1.08 to $23.85.
