Dell Q4 Earnings Fall

Net profit fell to $679 million or 31 cents per share from $726 million or 32 cents per share in 2007. For the fiscal year 2008 revenue rose 6% to $61.13 billion compared with $57.42 billion in fiscal 2007 and earnings increased 14% to $2.94 billion or $1.31 per share from $2.58 billion or $1.14 per share in fiscal 2007. Sales in the fourth quarter rose 10% from a year ago and 2% from third quarter. Earnings in the quarter rose 6% from a year ago and 11% from the third quarter.

 
Segment Review

Revenue in Brazil, Russia, India and China rose 36% on a 50% increase in unit sales.

Growth was also strong in Asia Pacific and Japan where revenue grew 28% and unit sales were up 41%. Americas International revenue rose 22%.

In the quarter, Dell increased mobility revenues by 24% and unit shipments were up 37%.

Services revenue gained 7% and the company’s deferred services revenue balance grew 25% to $5.3 billion.

Earnings Guidance and Share Price Review
For the current year, Dell expects a difficult fiscal 2009 due to increased costs related to restructuring.

Analysts surveyed by Thomson Financial are looking for earnings or 35 cents per share in the current quarter on revenue of $15.83 billion. Full-year, earnings per share are guided at $1.37 and revenue at $61.37 billion.

After hours Friday, Dell shares dropped $0.03 or 0.15% to $19.87. Over the past 52 weeks, the stock has traded in the range $18.87 to $30.77. Analysts are now targeting a one-year price of $29.
