The washers and dryers maker added that net income in the latest quarter increased 72% from a year ago to $187 million, or $2.38 a share. Sales rose 7.5% to $5.33 billion. Whirlpool said 2008 profit may increase to $8.50 to $9 a share on reduced expenses and higher prices. Whirlpool warned that North American industry sales may decline 3% to 5% this fiscal year. |

For the second quarter, operating income rose 24% to $1.4 billion after revenue climbed by 10%. Fiscal 2008 operating income is expected to grow in the mid-teens range. |
