Wendy’s saved $20 million in costs as a result of its efforts to tighten its expenses. |

Humana Reports a 57% Increase in Profit

| For the fiscal year, Humana’s net income rose 71% from a year ago, to nearly $833.7 million. Quarterly revenue increased 12% to $6.34 billion, while annual revenue jumped 18% to $25.3 billion. Pretax earnings in the company’s government segment amounted to $304.6 million compared with $187.3 million a year ago. Medicare Advantage premiums climbed 22%, to $2.8 billion. |

Whirlpool Profit Rises 72% on Overseas Sales

| Fourth-quarter profit growth beat analysts’ views thanks to improved overseas sales and decreasing costs. The washers and dryers maker added that net income in the latest quarter increased 72% from a year ago to $187 million, or $2.38 a share. Sales rose 7.5% to $5.33 billion. Whirlpool said 2008 profit may increase to $8.50 to $9 a share on reduced expenses and higher prices. Whirlpool warned that North American industry sales may decline 3% to 5% this fiscal year. |

| NEWS Corporation reported a first half net profit of $1.56 billion versus $1.67 billion a year ago thanks to growth in the media group''s cable network performance. Operating income in the first six months of the fiscal year increased to $2.465 billion from $1.995 billion a year ago. For the second quarter, operating income rose 24% to $1.4 billion after revenue climbed by 10%. Fiscal 2008 operating income is expected to grow in the mid-teens range. |
