Earnings Review

Brown-Forman Corporation ((BF.A)) slumped 4.1% or $2.17 to $51.23 after the spirit and wine maker said sales in the first-quarter ending in July fell 5% from a year ago at $856 million.

Net income in the quarter dropped 7% to $144 million or 36 cents per diluted share compared to the $156 million or 37 cents per share from the same quarter last year.

Bob Evans Farms Inc (BOBE) jumped 4.2% or $1.63 to $40.32 after the full-service restaurant operator said revenues in the first-quarter ending on July 29 fell 5% from a year ago at $306.2 million.

Same restaurant sales in the quarter slumped 4.3%.

Net income in the quarter rose 3% to $9.2 million or 46 cents per diluted share compared to the $4.3 million or 31 cents per share from the same quarter last year.

Bob Evans forecasted net sales in the year in the range of $1.28 billion to $1.33 billion and same restaurants sales about negative low-single digit to flat and diluted earnings per share between $2 and $2.17.

Chico's FAS, Inc (CHS) surged 12.5% or $1.41 to $12.72 after the specialty apparel retailer said total net sales in the second-quarter ending in July plunged 7.3% from a year ago at $635.7 million.

Comparable store sales in the quarter dropped 3.5%.

Net income in the quarter soared to $23 million or 17 cents per diluted share compared to the $2.1 million or 2 cents per share from the same quarter last year.

Caleres Inc, formerly Brown Shoe Company, Inc (CAL) advanced 6.1% or $1.49 to $25.75 after the footwear retailer stated sales in the second-quarter ending in July fell 2.3% from a year ago at $622.9 million.

Comparable store sales in the quarter decreased 1.1%.

Net income in the quarter jumped 17.9% to $19.8 million or 46 cents per diluted share compared to the $16.8 million or 38 cents per share from the same quarter last year.

H & R Block Inc (HRB) tumbled 10.8% or $2.61 to $21.59 after the tax and accounting services provider reported revenues in the first-quarter ending in July declined 9.4% from a year ago to $125.2 million.

Net loss in the quarter widened to $123.7 million or 56 cents per diluted share compared to the $99.7 million or 36 cents per share from the same quarter last year.

TRC Companies, Inc (TRR) surged 15% or 98 cents to $7.50 after the engineering and construction consultant said revenues in the fourth-quarter ending in June jumped 16% from a year ago to $132.3 million.

Net income in the quarter declined 13% to $5.9 million or 19 cents per diluted share compared to the $6.8 million or 22 cents per share from the same quarter last year.
