Australian market indexes closed down in thin trading and energy and resource stocks led the decliners. Harvey Norman said quarterly sales increased 6.1%. Beach Energy said quarterly sales declined 15%.

Maruti Suzuki, the largest automaker said quarterly profit soared 42% on 13% increases in revenues. Alembic profit jumped but Lupin profit declined. Axis Bank and State Bank of Mysore profit surged. Blue Star net swung to a loss.

BP profit tumbled and plans for lager cost cuttings through 2017. BASF profit surged 19% but revenues declined 5%. Novartis profit plunged 42% on 6% drop in revenues. Aixtron net loss narrowed. Air Liquide revenues in third-quarter soared 8%.

Market indexes were in consolidation after the S&P 500 index rose 7.9% in the month so far. Weak third-quarter trading was largely overcome in the last three weeks as tech and large caps lead the gainers.

Bharti Airtel, the largest wireless carrier said quarterly profit rose 10%. Asian Paints net advanced 12%. Godrej Consumer net soared 22%. HDFC net jumped 18% on 12% increase in revenues. L&T Finance net surged 19%. Rallis India net declined 22%.

Nikkei average in Tokyo closed at a 2-month high after China lowered its rate in a surprise move and ECB offered to do more to support lending. The moves by two central banks stoked speculation of additional stimulus steps from the Bank of Japan. Hitachi and Panasonic surged on stronger earnings.

Australian market indexes struggled to hold on to the higher opening and closed down. Bank of Queensland priced its $550 million floating rate loan at 115 basis points premium to 3-month bank bill swap rate. Ten Network Holdings reported annual net loss of $312 million.

Philips net swung to profit on 13% increase in revenues and reaffirmed to spin-off its Lighting unit in the first-half in 2016. Peugeot revenues jumped 3%. Standard Chartered plans to closed equity derivatives and convertible bonds businesses. TNT Express net loss narrowed.

Duke Energy agreed to acquire Piedmont Natural Gas for $4.9 billion. Pep Boys agreed to be acquired by Japan-based Bridgestone. General Atlantic agreed to acquire 21.6% stake in India-based IIFL. Laboratory Corp net soared 11%. Roper profit jumped 3%. Xerox net swung to a loss.
