Microsoft announced its largest job cut in the company''s history and second largest reduction since 2009. The software developer will focus on mobile and cloud computing and retrench from its recently acquired handset maker Nokia Group for $7.2 billion.

Stocks on Wall Street dropped after geopolitical tensions rose. Malaysian Airlines passenger jet was shot down by a missile over the Ukrainian airspace. Oil and gold gained and the dollar advanced and market indexes in Europe and New York fell. Microsoft announced its deepest job cut.

The yen gained 0.2% and market indexes in Tokyo closed lower led by a fall in freight shipping and financial brokerage companies. Investors turned cautious ahead of the revision on the economic update schedule to release after market close. Sumitomo Electric Industries Ltd revised its full-year outlook.

Liberty Global agreed to acquire ITV for £481 million. Novartis net rose 1% to $2.59 billion. Nordea Bank net profit plummeted 11% to €686 million. Sandvik profit plunged 17% to 1.54 billion kronor. SAP profit tumbled 23% to €556 million but enterprise software developer lifted outlook.

Resource stocks traded higher in Australia after mining companies reported higher quarterly production. Guildford Coal received unsolicited offer for its coal assets. Mount Gibson reported record annual sales and production. Woodside Petroleum second quarter oil production increased 17.5%.

Stocks on Wall Street traded higher after Time Warner rejected $80 billion offer from 21st Century Fox. Rupert Murdoch said he is prepared to increase his offer and set in motion a long fight to acquire the media giant.
