Stocks in Tokyo closed lower but investors held out for gains later in the year. Dai-ichi Life is set to approve stock sale of at least $2 billion to fund its acquisition of Protective Life Corp. Osaka Organic Chemical reported weak growth in sales and net declined.

Miners and banks led the gainers in Australia for the second day in a row and trading volume was heavy. Building approvals in June rose but seasonally adjusted retail sales dropped 0.5%. Lynas Corp plans to move its headquarters to Malaysia.

U.S. market indexes traded sideways after small cap index reached an intra-day high yesterday. S&P 500 index traded at a new intra-day high and the tech heavy Nasdaq Composite index traded at a high not seen since 2001.

Investors in Japan looked to overseas markets and took an optimistic view on the global economy and bid up exporters. Sony and Toyota Motor gained more than 0.7%. Nippon Yusen and Mitsui OSK Limes soared 2% after freight rate index advanced.

Australian stocks jumped and the Aussie dollar held despite the May trade deficit soared 145% and was the widest in eighteen months. Weak iron ore prices and 6% increase in Aussie dollar contributed to the deficit. Australand Property Group accepted $2.6 billion offer.
