Market indexes in New York traded higher and private manufacturing index showed a slight expansion. Auto sales rebounded slightly in March after struggling for two months on harsh weather conditions. Intuitive Surgical gained on FDA approval.

Checkpoint and Gencorp net loss narrowed. Chrysler said March sales were the best since 2007 and climbed 13%. Ford sales rose 3%. Toyota sales climbed 4.9%. Verint Systems earnings rose 4%.

Stocks extended rally to the eighth day in Tokyo and construction and airlines stocks participated in the advance. Office products retailer reported March month sales increased 31%. Software developer Jastec reported net income surge of 45% on 10% increase in sales.

Alstom sold its steam auxiliary unit to Triton for €730 million. BHP intends to spin off its non-core assets in a separate company worth $20 billion. GKN acquired Williams Hybrid Power for £8 million. Weir proposed a merger to Finland based Metso for £8.5 billion.

Stocks in Sydney pared most of the 1% loss at the opening after two manufacturing reports indicated mixed picture of manufacturing sector in China. Reserve Bank of Australia held benchmark interest rate for the seventh time in a row and noted a solid expansion in the housing market.

Gati surged after Japan-based Kintetsu World acquired 5% stake. Kalpataru Power secured new orders aggregating to more than Rs 700 crore. KEC Intl sold 7.3 acres of land to Tata Housing. Maruti sales in March dropped 6% and for the year fell 1%. M&M tractor sales in March rose 2%.
