Australian market indexes opened higher but the weakness in resource sector dragged the indexes to close down. Atlas Iron reported a surge in net sales and swung to profit in the first-half. Graincorp lowered its earnings outlook. IOOF net profit in the first-half soared 45%.

Elecon Engineering secured an order from NTPC. JP Associates plans to reduce the debt and sell stakes in Bhilai Cement and Bokaro Steel. Kinetic sold its entire stake in Mahindra Two Wheelers. Tata Power to look for additional capital at a board meeting on Feb 27.

Stocks on Wall Street gained and the S&P 500 index traded at a new intra-day high. Netflix agreed to pay for faster video streaming to Comcast paving the way for other carriers to charge. RF Micro Devices agreed to acquire TriQuint Semi for $1.6 billion.

Stocks in Tokyo closed lower following general weakness in Asian markets. The yen gained and insurers and developers led the decliners in trading. Zeria Pharmaceutical dropped 7% after the company plans to raise as much as 18.7 billion yen in a public offering.

Bunzl net climbed 7% to £206.8 million and the outsourcing company acquired two businesses in Germany and the Czech Republic. Dixons is in merger talk with Carphone Warehouse. HSBC profit surged 16% to $15.6 billion and loan impairment charges dropped.

Australian market indexes turned lower in the afternoon trading to close flat after China added more restriction on housing market lending. Transfield Services soared 25% after the company won $1.2 billion contract to build an immigration processing center on Nauru and Manus Islands.
