Unilever agrees to acquire Sara Lee personal care business in Europe for €1.25 billion in cash. The purchase will increase the consumer goods company’s reach in mid-price products in Europe that generate higher margins but are stagnant.

Durable goods orders fell 2.4%, second monthly decline in three months. The inventory rebuilding in the last six months had lifted hopes among investors that orders will keep increasing for the rest of the year. Research In Motion Limited plunges 15%.

Karoon Gas Australia Ltd led the decliners in the S&P ASX 200 index with a loss of 18.7%. Brickworks Ltd full-year sale surges. David Jones Ltd full-year net profit rises. Karoon gas plunges as much as 22% after initial test results of the second well at Browse Basin field were negative.

U.S. stocks drifted lower as three initial public offering hit the market. Market indexes fell after the release of home sales data in August. Crude oil, copper and silver dropped 4%. Markets in North and South America and in Europe fell between 0.7% and 2.3%.
