Costco, Dollar Tree, Dollar General Net Jump; Sears Net Loss Widens

12:00 PM New York Costco third-quarter net jumped 6% to $545 million. Dollar Tree first-quarter net surged 235% to $233 million. Dollar General first-quarter net soared 17% to $295 million. Sears Holdings first-quarter net loss widened to $471 million. Tech Data first-quarter net plunged 35% to $33 million.

Tollbooth Index gained 44.03 or 0.4% to 10,593.17.

Earnings Review

Abercrombie & Fitch Co (ANF), the specialty retailer said net sales in the first-quarter ending in April fell 3% from a year ago to $685.5 million.

Comparable store sales in the quarter declined 4%.

Net loss in the quarter narrowed to $39.6 million or 59 cents per diluted share compared to $63.2 million or 91 cents per share from the same quarter last year.

Chico''s FAS, Inc (CHS), the women''s specialty retailer stated in the first-quarter ending in April declined 7.9% from a year ago to $643 million.

Comparable store sales in the quarter slumped 4.2%.

Net income in the quarter fell 4.3% to $31.1 million or 23 cents per diluted share compared to $32.5 million or 22 cents per share from the same quarter last year.

Costco Wholesale Corporation (COST), the membership warehouses operator reported net sales in the third-quarter ending on May 8 increased 2% from a year ago to $26.15 billion.

Comparable store sales in the quarter were flat to break even.

Net income in the quarter jumped 5.6% to $545 million or $1.24 per diluted share compared to $516 million or $1.17 per share from the same quarter last year.

Dollar Tree, Inc (DLTR), the discount variety stores operator reported net sales in the first-quarter ending in April soared 133.6% from a year ago to $5.09 billion.

Same store sales in the quarter increased 2.3%.

Net income in the quarter surged 234.8% to $232.7 million or 98 cents per diluted share compared to $69.5 million or 34 cents per share from the same quarter last year.

Dollar General Corp (DG), the discount retailer reported sales in the first-quarter ending on April 2 advanced 7% from a year ago to $5.27 billion.

Same store sales in the quarter rose 2.2%.

Net income in the quarter soared 16.6% to $295 million or $1.03 per diluted share compared to $253 million or 84 cents per share from the same quarter last year.

Fred''''s, Inc (FRED), the discount stores operator said total revenues in the first-quarter ending in April jumped 8% from a year ago to $549.5 million.

Comparable store sales in the quarter rose 1%.

Net in the quarter swung to profit $1.3 million or 3 cents per diluted share compared to a loss of $0.03 million or break even cents per share from the same quarter last year.
